PALINGSOUND MUSEUM

People from Volendam like to pretend to be a sober people: ‘when you’re normal, you’re crazy enough’ is a popular saying behind which they try to hide. But how ‘ordinary’ can you still be when as a small Dutch village you develop your own unique music sound, that has achieved 40 years of international success? Indeed, that is quite crazy.

Most hits from the Dutch top 40 appear not to have been scored by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Abba, Madonna or Michael Jackson, but by a number of ‘normal’ Volendammers! The Palingsoundmuseum in Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum offers a search for 100 years of musical blood in Volendam.

SCULPTURE GARDEN ROB CERNEÜS

Rob Cerneüs, (1943) is an artist living in Monnickendam, whose bronze sculptures can be found in countless municipalities. A special man with beautiful stories and a unique world view.

Rob began welding together old materials at the age of 14. Nevertheless, he soon encountered limitations with the shape retention of old materials. In the search for his own style, Rob has focused more and more on working with bronze and stone over the years. A number of his works -with mutual warmth and tenderness as recurring elements- are permanently set up in the Smit Bokkum garden.

A search for the origins, the musical families, the specific eelsound, the bands and singers who gave this remarkable village on the IJsselmeer international allure with its own unique, successful sound.

A nice idea is to combine the visit to the Palingsoundmuseum with a visit to ‘Unique Volendam’. Here you can take a bird’s-eye view of the history of Volendam in a very interactive and fun way. ‘Unique Volendam’ is located in the FC Volendam stadium, less than 200 meters away from our Pavilion.
